REACH 174 SVHC Candidate List

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added one new REACH substance to the REACH SVHC Candidate List on July 17th, 2017. Additionally, the ECHA modified the information of one chemical already on the list.

The New REACH 174 SVHC Candidate List

Specifically, the newly added substance to the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list is Perfluorohexane-1-sulphonic acid and its salts (PFHxS). Its CAS number is 355-46-4.

Thus, adding this chemical brought the REACH SVHC list to 174 substances.

Corrosive SVHC

Health and Environmental Concerns of the 174th Chemical on the SVHC Candidate List

PFHxS Hazard

Potential health and environmental hazards of PFHxS include the following:

  • Harmful if swallowed (acute oral toxicity)
  • Causes severe skin burns (corrosive and irritant, acute dermal toxicity)
  • Hurts the eyes
  • Damaging if inhaled (acute inhalation toxicity)
  • Causes respiratory irritation
  • Suspected to cause cancer (carcinogenic)
  • Impairs organs through prolonged exposure

Also, PFHxS is very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) and therefore is detrimental to the environment long after it is released.

Applications of PFHxS

PFHxS is found as an impurity or a replacement of PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, which is a per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substance – PFAS) and used in:

  • Electronic parts (semiconductors)
  • Metal plating
  • Medical equipment
  • Textiles
  • Fire fighting foam
  • Paint, etc.

BPA on SVHC Candidate List

In addition to including PFHxS in the SVHC candidate list, the ECHA modified the entry for the pre-existing substance 4,4′-isopropylidenediphenol. Commonly, we refer to it as Bisphenol A (BPA). Its CAS number is 80-05-7.

To specify, the modification was the inclusion of BPA’s endocrine-disrupting properties to its list of potential hazards.

BPA SVHC Candidate List

Health and Environmental Concerns of BPA

Endocrine disruptors such as BPA cause several harmful effects on the human body, including:

  • Reduced fertility
  • Early puberty
  • Impaired immune function
  • Endometriosis
  • Obesity
  • Increased or decreased production of hormones

The following are also potential health and environmental hazards of BPA:

  • Reprotoxic (damage to fertility and unborn child)
  • May cause allergic skin reaction
  • Causes serious eye damage
  • Irritates respiratory tract
  • Toxic to aquatic life with long-term effects
BPA eyes irritation
BPA lungs hazard

Applications of BPA

BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic and polymeric coatings (epoxy resins).

Among other applications, manufacturers generally use Bisphenol A (BPA) in the following products:

  • Electronics:
    • Circuit boards
    • Car parts
    • Televisions
    • Smartphones

  • Safety equipment:
    • Bike helmets
    • Reading glasses
    • Bullet-proof glass
    • Police shields

  • Medical Devices
  • LEDs
  • High-performance adhesives
  • Water bottles
  • Paints and coatings
  • Thermal paper (used as sale receipts)
